Could we see Errol Spence Jr. vs Shawn Porter this summer?
In aftemath of IBF Welterweight champion Errol Spence’s decisive win over Mikey Garcia there has been a lot of discussion about what is next for the fighter called “The Truth”. Yes, Manny Pacquiao was in the ring afterwards creating the buzz of a possible Spence – Pacquiao fight next. However, so far no follow-up discussions or serious negotiations are taking place for that potential bout.
Also, given Pacquiao’s recent poll on twitter omitted Spence’s name as a potential opponent, the fight’s likelihood doesn’t look good.
So then the question becomes, what’s next for Errol Spence? Look no further than WBC Welterweight champion Shawn Porter. Porter spoke with local reporters last night in Oxon Hill, MD while attending the Lamont Peterson – Sergey Lipinets card. He was asked what’s next up for him. Porter responded by saying he believes his next fight will be against Errol Spence this summer on FOX Sports PPV.
Not only did Porter disclose that a fight with Spence is next up for him, but that he’s also back in training for said fight against Spence. While nothing has been officially announced, there has been talk about the possibility of a bout between Errol Spence and Shawn Porter ever since Porter defeated Danny Garcia to win the vacant WBC crown in September 2018.
Following his win over Mikey Garcia, Spence indicated that he would like to return to the ring this Summer. With Pacquiao seemingly out of the picture for a fight during that time, it would seem reasonable for Spence and Porter to fight each other.
A Spence – Porter clash would be a good look for both men. Not only would it represent a unification bout, it would mean good money for both fighters. For Spence in particular, following the high-profile win over Mikey Garcia, a win over the likes of a Shawn Porter would be very good for his resume.
