Gilberto Ramirez wants to win a championship, calls out Dmitry Bivol

Former WBO super middleweight champion Gilberto “Zurdo” Ramirez (42-0, 28ko) now fights in the loaded light heavyweight division. Zurdo stopped veteran Cuban fighter Sullivan “Sully” Barrera and immediately called out WBA “Super” champion Dmitry Bivol (18-0, 11ko).

Zurdo is a former champion that many fans have forgotten exists. One of the reasons for this could be his departing from Top Rank back in 2019 halted his momentum. He tried going at it alone over the next two years by creating Zurdo promotions. He would co-promote two fights against Tommy Karpency and Alfonso Lopez that went under the radar fighting.

Ramirez was involved in a purse bid with former WBC Interim champion “Sir” Marcus Browne for the vacant Interim title. However, the former world champion pulled out of the fight with Browne and later signed with Golden Boy Promotions.

There is no denying that Zurdo is a talented fighter. He is now with a new promotional company in a new division and ready to get his career back on the big stage. His performance against the Cuban veteran was only a stepping stone to a much bigger fight.

Ramirez’s body assault took a toll on Barrera. Finally, in the fourth round after being hit with two perfect body shots and two knockdowns, the referee stepped in to wave off the fight. Zurdo got the victory in front of a pro-Mexican crowd and seized the moment by calling out WBA “Super” champion Dmitry Bivol.

“Bivol, you are next.”

This has to be music to the ears of Matchroom Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn. Earlier this year, Hearn revealed that they had made an offer to fight Ramirez. It looks like now is the perfect time to make that fight happen.
