Devin Haney vs Rolando Romero is a High-Reward Unification
A match being proposed for this spring is a welterweight unification battle between Devin Haney, the WBO champion known as “The Dream,” and WBA titleholder Rolando Romero. If Haney is smart, this is a fight he should not pass up.
Initially, Romero wanted nothing to do with a fight against Haney. Now, they are reportedly deep in negotiations, with May 30 targeted as the date and a location still to be determined. Both camps have also been trading words on social media about the potential matchup, adding to the intrigue surrounding the fight.
Haney (33-0, 15 KOs) won the WBO strap with a decision victory over Brian Norman Jr. in November 2025. The win helped restore some faith in him within the boxing community after he looked listless and pedestrian in what became a no-contest against Ryan Garcia in April 2024 and during a lackluster victory over Jose Ramirez in May 2025.
WHY TAKE THE FIGHT?
Romero (17-2, 13 KOs) has been inactive since scoring a unanimous decision victory over Garcia on the same card in which Haney defeated Ramirez. Following that win, Romero was elevated to full-time WBA champion in August 2025.
Some might assume that, based on their respective performances against Garcia, Romero would be the favorite over Haney. Not so fast, boxing fans. As the saying goes, styles make fights.
Haney holds advantages in height, size, and reach. In addition, the WBO champion is faster, more athletic, and possesses superior boxing skills and ring IQ. If Haney performs the way he did against Norman, it’s easy to envision him outboxing Romero over the course of the fight.
Most importantly, fighters should never pass up the opportunity to become a unified champion. A victory over Romero would add another meaningful name to Haney’s résumé and further solidify his standing at welterweight. That alone should be more than enough incentive for “The Dream” to accept the fight with open arms.
