Rolly Romero Says a Fight with Devin Haney Will Never Happen
Within the sport of boxing, the champions should seek to stand alone atop their division. To do so however, one must be willing to face your contemporaries. Sadly, this is clearly not the case with WBA welterweight champion Rolando “Rolly” Romero (17-2, 13 KO’s), when considering WBO 147-pound champion Devin “The Dream” Haney (33-0, 15 KO).
Despite both being belt-carrying champions, Rolly has made it crystal clear that he wants zero smoke with Haney. Romero made his mind known in a recent interview with Fight Hype.
“Why didn’t they call me out after I beat Ryan [Garcia]? Why didn’t they call me out directly after they beat [Brian] Norman [Jr.]? Why did they sit down and play all that humble stuff? But me and Devin are never going to fight. I want nothing to do with that fight. Like I said way back when, I believe he should go do his rematch with Ryan.”
MAKE IT MAKE SENSE
In the past, both Rolly and Haney have almost delighted in taking shots at one another. At that time, however, Romero did not have a title and was largely deemed to be a joke. Since then, Rolly gave Gervonta “Tank” Davis a bit of trouble, picked up a strap and defeated polarizing fighter Ryan Garcia. Clearly these significant professional earmarks could not bolster his confidence enough to challenge The Dream.
It would be interesting to hear Romero more articulately flesh out his reasoning for evading a substantial paycheck, unifying belts and knocking off one of the most talked-about boxers on the planet. Shy of that explanation, from here it will be revealing to see who Rolly deems a good opponent since popular, well-respected champions don’t fit the bill.
