Rolly Romero Sets his Sights Solely on Becoming a Pay-Per-View Star!
When it comes to boxing, most fighters want one of three things from the sweet science. That is money, fame, and a great legacy. However, not all fighters want an everlasting legacy. For former WBA Interim 135-pound champion Rolando “Rolly” Romero (14-0, 12KOs), being a pay-per-view star is all that matters.
The unbeaten contender is set to engage with multi-weight world champion Gervonta “Tank” Davis (26-0, 24KOs) on May 28 for Davis’ WBA Regular lightweight title. The fight, which will headline a Showtime Pay-Per-View, will serve as Romero’s opportunity to shine bright on the big stage at the Barclays Center in New York City in the biggest fight of his young career.
Rolly and Davis happen to be in a loaded division with blossoming young fighters and veteran former world champions. The biggest fight in the division will take place on June 5. Then, unified 135-pound champion George Kambosos takes on WBC champion Devin Haney for undisputed lightweight honors. Obviously, both men are set to not only make big money, but also greatly enhance their legacies, whether they win lose, or draw.
ALL ABOUT BUTTS IN SEATS!
However, don’t expect Romero to prioritize being an undisputed champion! The hard-hitting contender only wants to be a PPV star, as he told Fight Hype.
“I really don’t give a fuck about that. I want to be a pay-per-view star. That’s what matters in this sport. If you ain’t filling seats, you don’t matter. “
To some, his comments may come as a shock. However, this era of boxers has proven to be more about money, fame, and social media than legacy. Furthermore, you have to respect Romero for coming out and being straight up about what it is he’s trying to accomplish in the sport of boxing. Most fighters would say they are about both money and legacy when that’s not truly the case.
