Rolando Romero Has his Sights Set On A Fight with Ryan Garcia

Rolando “Rolly” Romero (15-1, 13 KOs) and Ryan Garcia (23-1, 19 KOs) are two of the most talked-about fighters in boxing. More and more, Romero is making the case that they should fight one another.

MAKING IT CLEAR

Romero is nearly two weeks removed from his May 13 ninth-round stoppage win over Ismael Borroso to capture the WBA junior welterweight title. Immediately after that fight, Romero said Garcia is at the top of his list of future opponents.

That continues to be the case. While talking with the media source Inside Fighting, Romero doubled down on his stance.

“I want it to happen. The boxing world wants it to happen. I hope Ryan and his team wants it to happen, and if everyone wants it to happen, let’s make this shit happen.”

A MARKETABLE MATCHUP

The 140-pound champion considers himself a mainstream attraction, and is looking for the big-money matchups. A fight with Garcia certainly qualifies as an attention-grabbing fight.

Despite Garcia’s seventh-round stoppage loss to Gervonta “Tank” Davis on April 22, Garcia is still one of most visible figures in the sport. His fight against Davis was a huge box-office success. Rolly respects Garcia, but is buzzing with excitement about the potential clash.

“I have the belt. If y’all want to become world champion, come fuck with me . . . I believe Ryan can be a world champion by the end of this year, too, but not with me.”

“Ryan is a tremendous fighter. The only people he cannot beat happens to be myself, Gervonta Davis, and depression.”

Garcia has announced that his future will be as a junior welterweight, and suggested on social media that his return to the ring is imminent.

Ryan Garcia says he will return soon

The question is, will Garcia’s next fight be against Rolly? That’s highly unlikely. Garcia is working with a new trainer in Derrick James. Surely, there needs to be a period of orientation for Garcia and James to gel. But a showdown between Romero and Garcia for either later this year or early 2024 is a definite possibility. It’s a fight that Rolly desperately wants.
