Canelo Alvarez vs Caleb Plant in 2020?
After news of super middleweight champions Callum Smith (27-0, 19KOs) and Billy Joe Saunders (29-0, 14KOs) turning down offers to face Canelo Alvarez (51-1-2, 36KOs), word has started to spread that Alvarez and his team have turned their attention to IBF super middleweight champion Caleb “Sweethands” Plant (19-0, 11KOs).
That’s not official, just a going rumor at the moment.
IS PLANT THE BIGGEST THREAT TO ALVAREZ AT 168?
The Tennessee native has some business to take care of on February 15 when he welcomes the hard-hitting mandatory Vincent Feigenbutz (31-2, 28KOs) to his backyard of Nashville.
Plant is an athletic guy who possesses an overall good skill set. He exudes confidence and has proclaimed he is indeed the best guy in the division. Opinions on that may vary, but Plant feels otherwise.
While Smith and Saunders are very good fighters in their own right, Plant may be more of a threat with a higher ceiling.
He’s 27 and has shown steady improvement each fight he’s been in.
With bigger fights on the horizon, assuming he handles business against Feigenbutz, it’s important that his progression continues.
Alvarez, by picking Plant, would actually be given credit as this would be a fresh match-up with a guy in or close to his prime.
While the IBF champion may be the underdog going into a potential fight, he would be a live one!
The jury is still out on Plant until he truly faces a guy considered on his level. What he’s shown as of now warrants him at least the opportunity to show what he has against a bonafide superstar.
He’s also a champion, which makes him even more of an appealing option.
Will he get his big shot at the cash cow of the sport? Only time will reveal that.
I for one would love to see this match-up materialize.
