Gary Russell Jr calls out Adrien Broner!
WBC featherweight champion “Mr” Gary Russell (31-1, 18KOs), who’s been unable to secure a big fight unification bout at 126, is prepared to go way out of his comfort zone to obtain a marquee fight.
Russell, one of the more talented fighters in boxing, has been the WBC featherweight champion for five years and has only defended his title a whopping five times. That’s a true head-scratcher, since his inactivity hasn’t been caused by injury or promotional problems. The cause has been Russell who, for whatever reason, doesn’t seem to be interested in fighting more than once a year.
Now at the age of 32, he senses that it’s time for a big move in his career. So much so that he’s willing to go up and meet fighters three or four weight divisions higher than him. That’s right! He’s claimed to be willing to move up to 140 and 147, or at least meet potential opponents at a catch-weight.
WHO DOES HE HAVE IN MIND?
The “so-called” retired Adrien “The Problem” Broner (33-4-1, 24KOs) was on the receiving end of the call-out by the featherweight champion.
“That’s what it’s looking like. If somebody at 47 want some bump, they can get it. AB at 40, he can get it, he know what it is. Tell AB he can get it too. We can move up, I’ll meet these dudes at catchweights. Niggas scared, they acting like suckas.”
Broner, a four-division champion, certainly would represent a big name. However, he’s been far from impressive in his most recent ring outings. He’s 1-2-1 in his last four fights and his most recent bout came against Manny Pacquiao (62-7-2, 39KOs) in January of 2019.
Russell, who’s a small guy, would more than likely run into issues against men considerably taller and bigger than him. As talented as he is and as vulnerable and horrible Broner has looked, the size gap may just be too much of an obstacle for Russell.
This is boxing and crazier things have happened before. Let’s hope Russell gets a big fight at 126, 130 or 135 real soon.
