Russell Is In Position For A Potential Title Shot

Super bantamweight fighter Gary Antonio Russell (22-1, 13 KO’s) defeated Victor Santillan (16-3, 7 KO’s) by unanimous decision.  With this victory Russell has given himself a chance to face undisputed champion “Monster” Naoya Inoue (33-0, 27 KO’s).

When the cards were revealed, Russell prevailed to the tune of 118-109 and 119-108 (twice). Along with the spoils of war, he collected the interim WBA super bantamweight title, which hung in the balance of this duel.

Even though Russell comes from a famous fighting family, it’s unlikely Inuoe looks in his direction next. While he possess the interim title, Russell has yet to establish himself as a marquee opponent worthy of Inoue. Team Russell may need help from the WBA who could order the Japanese undisputed champion to make the fight.

At the same time, stranger things have happened in the sport, so for now we will have to wait and see how Team Russell follows up with this beneficial victory.
