Ryan Garcia Takes WBC Belt From Mario Barrios in Dominant Win
For the first time in just over two years, “King Ry” Ryan Garcia (25-2, 20 KO’s) managed to finagle his way back into the win column. Garcia accomplished this by pitching a general shutout against Mario “El Azteca” Barrios (29-3-2, 18 KO’s). With the spoils of war, King Ry took control of El Azteca’s WBC welterweight title.
Garcia sat Barrios on the seat of his pants with a sturdy right hand to open the first round. From that point on, the battle was a case of wash, rinse and repeat. El Azteca lumbered around the ring in painfully wooden fashion whilst eating a smorgasbord of thudding body blows, swift hooks and wide, looping head shots.
Outside of operating like a Rock-Em, Sock-Em robot with two broken arms, Barrios did little in the ring over the full twelve rounds to support or highlight. During his post-fight interview, Garcia called out WBO super lightweight champion Shakur Stevenson (25-0, 11 KO’s). Stevenson is coming off a dominant UD win over Teofimo Lopez and appears to be open to the showdown.
