Vergil Ortiz Survives Serhii Bohachuk in an Instant Classic
In what was the most difficult fight of his career, Vergil Ortiz (22-0, 21 KOs) pulled out a tight majority decision (113-113, 114-112, 114-112) over Serhii Bohachuk (24-2, 23 KOs) to win the WBC interim junior middleweight title in front of an enthusiastic crowd at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas, Nevada.
At the midway point of the opening round, Bohachuk was credited with a knockdown after a right hand put Ortiz down on one knee. But Ortiz was getting the better of the action in the opening rounds as he employed some excellent boxing and counterpunching to go with his noted inside fighting.
Early in round eight, Bohachuk put Ortiz down for a second time in the contest courtesy of a counter left hook. Ortiz responded by buzzing his adversary later in the round. This fight evolved into a war, and the Las Vegas crowd was on their collective feet. The heated action continued for the remainder of the fight as both men landed heavy leather until the final bell.
Bohachuk versus Ortiz is a candidate for the 2024 Fight of the Year. Afterward, the victor said he wanted to fight the winner of the October clash between WBC champion Sebastian Fundora and one-time unified welterweight champion Errol Spence.
