Shakhram Giyasov Takes Split Decision in Bout with Miguel Parra
In a moderately paced duel, undefeated welterweight boxer Shakhram “Wonder Boy” Giyasov (16-0-1, 9 KO’s) defeated Miguel “Maquina” Parra (22-5-1, 14 KO’s) by way of split decision. During the first few rounds, as Giyasov unthawed, Parra took the lead with his volume and aggression. Yet, by the fourth and fifth rounds Wonder Boy was firmly in control, coming forward and throwing with good variety to the head and body.
In the seventh round, referee David Soliven made a horrendous call when he ruled a left hook high in the rib cage as a low blow. Parra had been complaining of phantom low blows intermittently throughout the match. So, rather than an eight or ten count, Maquina was administered well over a minute to recover.
Giyasov controlled the majority of the action from that point until the final half of the last round when Maquina dug his heels in the ground and made a final blitz. Despite the effort, nothing of consequence landed. When the match went to the scorecards, Giyasov prevailed somewhat surprisingly by split decision to the tune of 95-94 (Parra) and 95-94, 96-93 (for Giyasov).
