Shakur Stevenson Decisions Artem Harutyunyan in First Defense
In the first defense of his title WBC lightweight title “Fearless” Shakur Stevenson (22-0, 10 KO’s) outboxed Artem “The Original” Harutyunyan (12-2-, 7 KO’s) en route to a unanimous decision win. The match began with a rather lackluster opening pair of rounds that saw a very herky-jerky Harutyunyan hit nothing but air and Fearless dodge and calculate information.
Beginning in the third round, Stevenson began letting loose with his offense and scoring consistently. Once the champ got going, he never let Harutyunyan get back into the fight in any significant manner. This is not to say that The Original was deterred in any way. He simply could not penetrate Stevenson’s very tight defense. By the mid-point of the duel, Stevenson’s body shots and sharp counterpunching had drained all the herky-jerky movements out of Harutyunyan.
Again, to his credit, The Original never stopped trying to win or coming forward; he simply couldn’t solve the riddle of Stevenson’s defense. Likewise, Fearless clearly was trying to get the match halted within the distance. He yet was unable to seriously hurt his opponent or overwhelm him to the point of compelling the referee to intervene. As a result, the duel went to the scorecards where Stevenson prevailed by way of unanimous decision to the tune of 119-109, 118-110 and 116-112.
