Callum Smith unhappy with offer to face Canelo Alvarez!

We are shortly removed from both DAZN promoter Eddie Hearn and Golden Boy Promotion Oscar De La Hoya claiming that offers were turned down by WBC middleweight champion Jermall “Hit Man” Charlo (30-0, 22ko). Now, it seems the two top boxing promoters can’t get it done amongst themselves either. Reports are burning up all over social media that WBA “super” super middleweight Callum “Mundo” Smith (27-0, 19ko) turned a fight with boxing’s biggest earner Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (51-1-2, 36ko).

De La Hoya told EPSN that the British champion turned down the fight. He also went so far as calling the WBA champion an idiot, with frustration added.

“What is wrong with these fighters?” ~ Oscar De La Joya of Golden Boy Promotions

Hearn also admitted that an offer was received and turned down. However, he hinted that maybe there wasn’t enough green being offered.

“If we feel the offer is right, he will jump at the chance.” ~ Eddie Hearn of DAZN

It is no secret that there is pressure on Golden Boy from DAZN wanting a profitable return for their 11-fight, $365 million deal, which only produced sub-par numbers for fights against opponents Rocky Fielding, Daniel Jacobs, and Sergey Kovalev.

Furthermore, both fighters fight on the same platform, so this fight should be easy to make. Then, why was the offer turned down? Is the issue really about money or something else?

The field is getting narrow. Recently, talks collapsed with making a fight with WBA”regular” middleweight champion Ryota Murata. However, all isn’t lost. There is still WBO middleweight champion Demetrius “Boo Boo” Andrade, or perhaps a third fight with IBF champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin.

It has been tough lately, it seems, for Golden Boy to find something that will work and it is becoming a mad scramble finding an appeasing opponent. The hunt will continue as the window to keep the scheduled Cinco De Mayo weekend fight date narrows.
