Mohamed Soumaoro And Axl Melendez Score Impressive Victories
Junior welterweight Mohamed Soumaoro (13-1, 6KO) beatdown the younger Angel Vazquez (12-1, 6KO) en route to an eight-round stoppage. Soumaoro was clicking on all cylinders using his superior boxing skills as the jab, footwork, defense, and counterpunching were on point throughout the fight. He hit Vazquez with everything, including the kitchen sink. It was like watching a glorified sparring session as he landed hard hooks to the body and found a home for the pull-counter right hand that kept Vazquez on wobbly legs.
Soumaoro began to toy with his opponent before ripping off blistering combination punches against a shell-shocked opponent. To his credit, Vazquez did land a couple of good counters, but there was nothing on those punches as he was clearly weak from taking too much punishment. Finally, in the eighth-round, Vazquez’s corner had seen enough and threw in the towel. Soumaoro is now on a three-fight win streak.
AXL MELENDEZ OVERWHELMS DEMONTAZE DUNCAN
In the junior middleweight division, Axl Melendez (6-0, 4KO) upset Demontaze Duncan (8-1, 8KO) in a six-round war. From the sound of the bell, Melendez got in his opponent’s chest and landed variations of the right hand that hurt Duncan early in the fight. As the fight continued, Duncan showed heart as he fought back. He found a home for uppercuts and body shots in an effort to slow down the pace of Melendez.
Toward the end of the fight, Duncan’s body language begin to show signs of wear and tear from those right hands and fast combination punches from Melendez. When the final bell sounded, the crowd cheered both fighters for their effort. One Judge scored it 57-57, and the other two had it 58-56 in favor of Melendez. 3Kings Boxing scored it 59-55 for Melendez, who handed Duncan his first defeat and ended the young man’s knockout streak.
