Spence Jr Vs Ocampo
After rumors going back and forth in the media recently about possible opponents for IBF Welterweight champion Errol Spence Jr, he will end up facing the guy originally ordered to be his opponent, Carlos Ocampo according to multiple sources.
The IBF ordered Spence, 21-0, 18 KO, to make his next title defense against the unproven Ocampo, 22-0, 13 KO, last month. A purse bid was scheduled for March 6 at the IBF’s headquarters, but the IBF informed the involved parties Tuesday night that it was canceled because Tom Brown, the promoter representing Spence, and Zanfer Promotions (Ocampo) came to an agreement.
The fight is scheduled to take place on June 16th in Dallas, Texas in front of Spence’s hometown fans. Spence has spoken publicly about the desire to bring a championship fight to Dallas and now he’ll get his wish. He was in the ring last month when he dismantled challenger Lamont Peterson easily at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn.
Ocampo, who is currently ranked number 3 by the IBF, has truthfully fought no one of any significance prior and is making a huge step up in facing Spence. It will also be the 22-year-olds first fight outside of Mexico.
The fight will be televised by Showtime as announced during the Boxing Upfront rollout they had earlier this month. Although we know the fight will take place in Dallas the venue is still unknown at this time.
