Rumors of Errol Spence vs Terence Crawford Bout Garner Lukewarm Response
Rumors suggest the undisputed welterweight showdown between unified champion Errol “The Truth” Spence Jr (28-0, 22KO) and WBO champion Terence “Bud” Crawford (39-0, 30KO) will take place on June 17. However, there are valid reasons to doubt this is actually the case until more concrete proof surfaces.
According to The Ring, the official announcement may come at the upcoming Gervonta Davis versus Ryan Garcia showdown on April 22. The two champions were supposed to fight in November 2022 before things unexpectedly fell apart.
Bud went on to score a stoppage over fringe contender David Avanesyan on the BLK Prime streaming app in December 2022. The Truth was said to be fighting former unified champion Keith Thurman at junior middleweight.
SHOULD FANS BELIEVE THE FIGHT WILL HAPPEN THIS TIME?
The fallout from the fight not happening in 2022 left several inside the boxing community very upset. Moreover, disinterest in the fight spread like wildfire after the WBO ordered Crawford versus number one contender Alexis Rocha. Others believed Spence was done fighting at welterweight given the Thurman fight information.
Where there is smoke, there is fire. In the past few weeks, social media received word the two champions have re-engaged in dialogue to make the fight. Several whispers from people close to the situation also revealed there was a high probability of the fight taking place.
Yet, fans have maintained the ‘I’ll believe it when I see them in the ring’ mentality. In this author’s opinion, to regain the trust of the boxing world, the official announcement needs to happen now. Hopefully, the speculations of the fight taking place become a reality because fans have grown tired of broken promises.
