Will Gervonta Davis Be On His Game When He Faces Roach?

On March 1, WBA lightweight champion Gervonta “Tank” Davis (30-0, 28 KO’s) will face WBA super featherweight champion Lamont Roach. The trouble is that Tank appears to be focused on everything that is not Lamont Roach. Instead of Roach, Davis has thrown stones at Chairman Turki Alalshikh, a recent Ring Magazine award ceremony, and 130-pound fighter Raymond Ford. He’s even floated the idea of retirement. Most recently, Tank posted a head scratching, eye-brow raising tweet about women unwittingly taking homosexual men into their beds.

Given this observed lack of focus, one would have to question where Tank’s mind is at. It’s a fair inquiry. To begin, no one on Earth was asking for this fight prior to it being announced. Since being unveiled, few have truly warmed to the contest. Said to say, it’s easy to envision the self-imposed face of boxing, Davis, losing interest in a fight devoid of any meaningful demand. It certainly doesn’t help that all those who think Roach will win could comfortably fit in a limo bus.

FORMULA FOR DISASTER?

Despite how thoroughly many are dismissing his chances, Roach is a talented competitor. Not only is he physically capable, Roach is bubbling over with confidence. The two have tangled in the ring before and are familiar with one another’s style. In this regard, the 130-pound champ must be enjoying his impending foe seemingly spreading himself so thin. As the old thought goes, the easiest way to lose your current fight is focusing on the next one.

Naturally, Roach will enter the ring with his mind focused on all-out victory. Nevertheless, in the court of public opinion, all he really has to do is get in the ring and hold his own. Given how the world has written him off, his bar of success is low. As an example, one has to search no further than Isaac Cruz.

Prior to his December 5, 2021 dance date with Tank, very few were talking loudly about Pitbull. After going twelve with Davis, his career and notoriety shot through the roof. The same could be said of Roach. Whether this turns out to be a good or bad thing, we still have a month to go before the Davis versus Roach clash. So let’s see what else Tank has up his social media sleeve.
