Team Haney Notifies the Public that Teofimo Lopez is the Target

Following his crushing loss to Ryan Garcia, one-time undisputed lightweight champion Devin “The Dream” Haney (31-0, 15 KO’s) only took a few months off before bursting back on the scene in a major way. Firstly, he has sued Garcia looking to recoup financial damages in his last fight. And secondly, via his father and chief second, Bill Haney, Team Haney has once again called out WBO junior welterweight champion Teofimo “The Takeover” Lopez (21-1, 13 KO’s).

Bill Haney levied the bold new challenge in a recent social media post:

“Teofimo Lopez you done [self-sensor] up! You done went over there to the Cam and Mase show and you lying like a [self-sensor]! Every opportunity to fight, we put it on the table for you, including an opportunity with Turki Alalshikh and your company, Top Rank, just a couple of months ago! But I am going to let you know, and the people, Devin Haney wants to fight you whenever, wherever including right now! So, let’s see what your fat mouth daddy got to say about that.”

IS RUBBER MEETING THE ROAD YET?!

Haney and Lopez have been in a position to face one another for the past several years over two divisions. Despite this close proximity and the desire of the fans, the thrilling bout has never come close to becoming a reality. So, given the history, it probably wouldn’t be a good idea to hold one’s breath thinking this will be the fortuitous occasion. Nevertheless, it was and remains a very solid matchup.

If the two did fight now, it would be rather intriguing given the timing – both are in need of a major win. Obviously, The Dream is in need to dilute those last images of him being hammered around the ring and repeatedly belted to the canvas. On the flipside, The Takeover has turned in shaky and lackluster performances for the better part of the past three years.

Even with their currently diminished stock, both still represent a major scalp for others. A win for either would no doubt inject a new burst of energy into their careers. Along with the natural bragging rights, Haney even has the opportunity to become champion again. Meanwhile, Lopez has the opportunity to dance with a potentially physically and mentally compromised Haney. Therefore, it will be very interesting to see how The Takeover responds to this call-out and who they face next.
