Is Tank Defending Ryan Garcia to Justify a Rematch?

Since their thrilling April 20 showdown, WBC junior welterweight champion Devin Haney and “King Ry” Ryan Garcia (25-1, 20 KO’s) remained the talk of the town. Initially, this was due to Garcia pulling off the upset that so few thought he was capable of. Then they buzzed for the scandal that erupted when King Ry popped dirty for PED’s. Many people, including WBA lightweight champion Abdul “Tank” Wahid (Gervonta Davis) (29-0, 27 KO’s), have come to Garcia’s aid.

A CASE OF DOUBLE-DIPPING?

For some, it came off as odd that Tank swooped in to take up for Garcia when all the fur began flying. Afterall, the two have shared the ring together but did not show a great deal of respect before or after the duel. So, what is prompting Wahid to rally around Garcia now? The most obvious answer is: personal gain.

As previously mentioned, Tank already toppled Garcia by way of seventh round knockout back on April 22, 2023 in a rather successful pay-per-view event. Understandably, Wahid would enjoy running a fight back for a major pay day when he is facing a previously vanquished foe. That sounds like a solid two-for-one deal. His team flirted with doing the same thing with Isaac Cruz.

SET TRIPPIN?

Yet, while this all sounds good and plausible, it still does not explain why Tank is so publicly siding with Garcia. He could easily pursue a fight with King Ry behind the scenes and keep his fingerprints off this round of bickering and controversy.

If anything, it seems that Wahid is just delighting in being able to kick Haney while he is down. They have shared a mutual disdain and public rivalry, so that would make sense. For the time being however, let’s see how the next several weeks and months play out for this trio of talent.
