Katie Taylor Honored as Female Fighter of the Year by Ring Magazine!

Ireland’s Katie Taylor (15-0, 6KOs) reigned supreme over women’s boxing in 2019. For her efforts, Ring Magazine has named her their 2019 Fighter of the Year.

Taylor, 33, had a remarkable year as she joined an elite category of fighters. She is only the third woman in the history of women’s boxing to become an undisputed champion. She joins previous Ring Magazine Fighter of the Year recipients Cecilia Braekhus (36-0, 9KOs) and Claressa Shields (10-0, 2KOs) from 2017 and 2018, respectively.

NOT WITHOUT HER CRITICS

However, Taylor would face criticism over her victory against then-WBC lightweight champion Delfine Persoon (44-2, 18KOs) in June 2019. Many people felt she received a gift decision from the judges in that fight. Taylor was bullied, bloodied and bruised resulting in what appeared to many as a guaranteed loss.

Yet, she would receive the win by way of a majority decision. Moreover, Ring Magazine also recognized this bout as the Fight of the Year!

There was a constant debate on who was truly the number one pound for pound fighter in women’s boxing was. Many Ireland and British fans felt it was Taylor, while many American fans argued for Shields. Nevertheless, Taylor shined brighter in 2019 having participated in a unification and undisputed bout, winning both and moving up to junior welterweight to claim another world title.

I’m sure the debate will continue on throughout all of 2020!

We here at 3kingsboxing.com would like to extend our congratulations to Katie Taylor on a great 2019 campaign.
