Plant Breaks Down Past Sparring Session With Edgar Berlanga

In his last duel, 168-pound contender Edgar “The Chosen One” Berlanga (22-1, 17 KO’s) fought on the biggest stage of his professional career. In that prizefight, he came up short versus unified super middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez. Now, it’s time to figure out who is next on the list of opponents. Many in the boxing world feel this is the perfect time to take on one-time IBF 168-pound champion Caleb “Sweethands” Plant (23-2, 14 KO’s). This is logical because well before the Canelo prizefight, Plant and Berlanga have had a long simmering rivalry.

Over the past several weeks and months, Sweethands and The Chosen One have bumped gums at one another in public and over social media. In fact, there is a significant segment of the boxing community that felt Berlanga should have had to face Plant to even be considered a worthy adversary to challenge Alvarez. Even Plant’s biggest and most notorious rival, David Benavidez, co-signed this viewpoint.

KEEP IT REAL HOMIE!

In his last tour of duty, which was on the undercard of Alvarez versus Berlanga, Plant fought and stopped boxing wildcard Trevor McCumby. Even better for Plant, there is a huge pocket of fans who believe that this was the most exciting and entertaining fight on the entire card. In an effort to capitalize off this great showing, Sweethands has been on a small media tour.

While sitting down with Sway in the Morning, Plant confirmed a story that Berlanga had already told about a years-old sparring session they engaged in. Naturally, when The Chosen One was on the mic, he spun a tale where he was overtly dominant in the ring. Unsurprisingly, Plant did not remember it going that way.

“During our sparring session, naw, definitely not. He was shadow boxing for six rounds . . . I can’t remember how old he said he was but he was young, he wasn’t up to par at the time. Obviously, he’s gotten better but I’ve gotten a lot better too. But that definitely did not happen. I put that on my kids, I put that on my boxing career. Yeah, that definitely did not happen.”

“In that situation, we were boxing and after a little bit I’m like, ‘this guy can’t touch me,’ so I was just working on my defense. Really just showboating because we were in the Mayweather gym trying to make a point really. And I really didn’t know who he was at the time . . . but in that specific scenario, he was like playing with food, honestly. But he was young and inexperienced.”

THE TIME IS NOW!

There is no doubt that both Plant and Berlanga are big names in the division. And with their storied and on-going history, the fight is primed to sell itself. Yet, as is typically the case, we’ll have to wait and see who these two combatants sign on to fight next. Obviously, many in the fanbase will want it to be against one another.
