WBA Sets Purse Bid for Josh Taylor and Alberto Puello
If undisputed 140-pound champion Josh “The Tartan Tornado” Taylor (19-0, 13KOs) stays put in the junior welterweight division, his next fight will be against yet another mandatory challenger. The WBA announced an April 22 purse bid for Taylor vs Alberto Puello (20-0, 10KOs).
In his last ring outing on February 26, Taylor escaped with a disheartening split decision victory over Jack Catterall. In the bout, Catterall dropped and dominated the champion for the majority of the fight. However, as the home fighter, he was given the benefit. As he attempts to put the horrible performance against Catterall behind him, he faces a dilemma; stay at 140 and continue to defend his belts, or move up to the welterweight division? The latter is something he said he’s planning to do.
As for Puello, he’s unbeaten in 20 fights. His last win came in December of 2021 over Shawn Owens by unanimous decision. The Dominican Republic-born fighter is an unknown commodity. His first 19 career fights were in his home country. His last bout, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, marked his American debut.
If this bout happens, many people view it as one that Taylor should bounce back nicely in and remind the world why he’s a top pound-for-pound fighter.
3Kings Boxing will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as they become available.
