Teofimo Lopez Invites Devin Haney To Fight For His WBO Title!
On the same day it’s revealed that WBO super lightweight champion Teofimo”The Takeover: Lopez (19-1, 13 KO’s) is not retiring, he makes a major call out. For the umpteenth time, Lopez has laid out a social media challenge to undisputed lightweight champion Devin “The Dream” Haney (30-0, 15 KO’s).
Unfortunately this is not the first, second or even third time that this has happened. Team Lopez has established a pattern of showing interest in a match with Haney only to back track later.
For example, when heading into his last bout with Josh Taylor, Team Lopez expressed interest in a showdown with The Dream. The Takeover’s father and chief second, Teofimo Lopez Sr, told Bill Haney, The Dream’s father and lead trainer, that they wanted the match as soon as possible. The only trouble was Lopez Sr stated that they would require $20 million dollars to take the bout. Requesting such a staggering amount of money is all but guaranteeing that it will not happen. Let’s just hope that with this new call out comes with more realistic demands.
IS IT REAL THIS TIME?
At the present moment, Haney appears to be coming closer to finalizing a deal with WBC super lightweight champion Regis Prograis. Yet, a rumble with Lopez could easily take precedence over that potential duel. While not quite as clean as Lopez, Haney is coming off his own career best win over common opponent Vasiliy Lomachenko. Many in the fan base, and The Takeover himself, have stated their belief that The Dream should have lost.
After years of double-dutching with their interest in the fight, first asking for ten million then later asking for twenty million, only time will tell if Lopez pursues this fight with practical realism or simply to post sensational social media blurbs. In either case 3Kings Boxing will be here to chronicle every chapter of this on-going saga.
