Teofimo Lopez says Haney fight could be a mega-fight
Unified lightweight champion Teofimo “Take Over” Lopez (16-0, 12ko) is on top of the division after defeating former unified champion Vasyl “Hi-Tech” Lomachenko (14-2, 10ko), back on October 17.
However, there is an old nemesis that is beginning to get on his nerves in WBC champion Devin “The Dream” Haney (25-0, 15ko). Equally important, this rivalry goes back to when both champions were rising contenders.
WAR OF WORDS ON SOCIAL MEDIA
Things intensified when Take Over dropped a nickname for the WBC champion, calling him “The email champion”. Then there is when he once told Haney “Shut the fuck up kid, damn you annoying.”
The Dream would clap back, referring to his rival as “Pinocchio” when team Lopez made claims of trying to make a fight with him. Furthermore, he would refer to Take Over as the first-ever asterisk undisputed champion, mocking ESPN’s narrative. They proclaimed Lopez’s undisputed status following the WBC Franchise belt exchanging hands, something that was never part of being undisputed.
Yet, there is a chance these two could finally meet. After the Alvarez and Smith fight, the unified champions’ father, Lopez Sr, bumped into Eddie Hearn, co-promoter for Haney. Once there, he would ask for 10 million dollars to fight The Dream.
Of course, this prompted an immediate response from the WBC champion. He took to social media with another hard clap back.
“Y’all said I haven’t fought anybody, but Teofimo Lopez wants $10,000,000 to ride off into the sunset with when I beat him.”
THE UNIFIED CHAMPION IS PISSED
During an interview on SiriusXM Boxing radio The Ak & Barak show, Lopez was asked about fighting his arch-rival, and it was clear The Dream gets under his skin.
“I’ve been thinking about yeah. I’ll be honest man, that kid is pissing me off, like a lot. He’s like a mosquito that keeps coming, I’m just trying to swat it out. He’s nonstop yapping his mouth, but you haven’t really done much to be even talking like that.”
Lopez was just getting started. He would breakdown how the WBC champion is unaware of the favor that is being awarded to him.
“Honestly, I’m trying to do this kid a favor, but I don’t think he sees it. I’m trying to do the young man a favor, but I think that he’s not realizing it. I’m going to give you a couple more fights, so you can actually prove that you’re worthy to even fight this, and at least have the opportunity to do so.”
“It could be a mega-fight, it could be like the Loma-Lopez type of fight. It could be a Super Bowl type of fight.”
