Teofimo Lopez Cannot Afford to Lose Rolando Romero WBA Title Fight

Multi-divisional champion “The Takeover” Teofimo Lopez can’t afford to lose against WBA 147-pound champion Rolando “Rolly” Romero. In addition, some fans and pundits feel that a defeat could put him in gatekeeper status and call his future in the sport into question. In this author’s opinion, the fight against Romero is considered a do-or-die situation.

After retired fighters Errol Spence and Terence Crawford fought in 2023, the welterweight division has been on the decline. A resurgence is taking place with guys like Romero, Lopez, and WBO champion Devin Haney entering the division.

On Saturday, August 22, Lopez will attempt to dethrone Romero to become a three-division champion. The Brooklyn fighter is coming off a humiliating defeat where he lost the WBO 140-pound title to Shakur Stevenson. Stevenson literally did whatever he wanted in the ring and controlled the fight with a simple jab.

HAS HE RECOVERED MENTALLY?

That type of demoralizing defeat has the potential of destroying a fighter’s mentality. Furthermore, he has been taken off a few pound-for-pound lists. Lopez has shown fractures in his mental makeup in the past against guys like George Kambosos, Sandor Martin, and Jamaine Ortiz. He must shake off any lingering doubts about his mindset heading into this fight to be victorious.

Lopez is far from the same fighter who was riding a tidal wave of confidence after defeating then-top fighter Vasyl Lomachenko in 2020. He has been inconsistent at times, looking like a dominant fighter in one fight only to struggle horribly against lesser opposition in the next

Romero is riding high after defeating Ryan Garcia for the vacant title in 2025. He is familiar with The Takeover’s style after going several rounds of sparring. This doesn’t mean a victory is a forgone conclusion, but it does add spice to the story.

Lopez has to win impressively to regain his status as a top-level fighter.
