Lopez Sr. Says a Fight With Friend Rolly Romero Is Fair Game
In his last prizefight, Teofimo “The Takeover” Lopez (19-1, 13 KO’s) soundly defeated Josh Taylor by unanimous decision to take possession of his WBO super lightweight title. Now the former unified lightweight champion is looking to collect more belts at 140. In this pursuit, The Takeover and his father, Teofimo Lopez Sr., will not take friendship into account. This is precisely why they are not above gunning for The Takeover’s good friend, WBA 140-pound champion Rolando “Rolly” Romero (15-1, 13 KO’s). In a recent Q&A with Fight Hype, Lopez Sr. aired out his feelings on the matter.
“Rolly is a good friend of ours, but listen, in boxing there are no friends! And if the fight happens, it happens . . . we can go that route, it doesn’t matter!”
FRIENDS TO FOES
While it remains an interesting premise, this is not a new subject. In the past, Lopez has been heard voicing his willingness to slide in the ring with Rolly. Now that Romero is armed with a title, it brings a new flavor to the conversation.
In his last duel, Rolando Romero picked up what many thought was an undeserved win over Ismael Barroso. During that affair, Rolly had all he could handle and more before he was able to stun Barroso in the later rounds. Then, in somewhat dubious fashion, referee Tony Weeks jumped in to stop that match. Regardless of how people felt about the matter, Rolly was awarded both, the victory and the WBA title currently being sought by Lopez.
Without question, The Takeover would be viewed as the heavy betting favorite heading into the showdown but perhaps Rolly has a trick or two up his sleeve. Rolly did provide a few wrinkles for Regular WBA lightweight champion Gervonta Davis before getting hammered and stopped in the sixth round of their duel. First though, it would be good to gauge Romero’s temperature on this would-be fight. As it takes two to tango, Rolly may not be so gung-ho to clash with Lopez. In the past, he said he was ready to go but this might have changed over the years. Regardless of the ultimate outcome however, 3Kings Boxing will be here to report all the news.
