Yordenis Ugas Suffers Fractured Orbital Bone
Heading into his highly anticipated showdown with unified welterweight champion Errol “The Truth” Spence Jr (28-0, 22 KO’s), it was believed that Cuban boxer Yordenis “54 Milagros” Ugas (27-5, 12 KO’s) would provide a very stiff test. This did not turn out to be the case! Right from the start, Spence was the far busier and more accurate of the two fighters.
After gaining the early momentum, The Truth never relinquished it. During the course of the action, Spence was even able to cause quite a bit of swelling to Ugas’s right eye. In fact, the fight was ultimately stopped due to the severity of the damage. Now, it’s been confirmed that the Cuban actually suffered a fractured orbital bone. As a result, 54 Milagros will now have to sit on the sidelines while this significant injury heals.
WHAT DOES TOMORROW HOLD?!
Without question, this was a horrible turn of events to Ugas who, rather than leave the ring a three-belt champion, exited the squared-circle outclassed, beat-up and stripped of his WBA Super title. If there is any consolation that 54 Milagros has, it’s that fact that Spence is the highly rated athlete that he is. Having lost to such a boxer will not cast Ugas into an overly negative shadow. Due to the caliber of his victor, it would not be unreasonable to see Ugas come back against some very good names.
The Cuban could very well pursue a return match against established, but elder, competitors such as Keith Thurman or Danny Garcia. Both of these men have solid reputations in the sport and the division. Snagging a win over either would do a great deal to reestablish Ugas as a major player at 147. Although, Garcia has suggested that his days at welterweight are at an end. Yet, perhaps a match with the recently dethroned champion could be enough reason to stick around.
Then again, Ugas may attempt to show his worth by toppling one of the up-and-coming young lions in the division. Three names that are becoming increasingly inescapable are Vergil Ortiz Jr, Jaron Ennis and Conor Benn. All three are oozing with talent and potential and would make for excellent dance partners. Provided that Ugas fought and convincingly defeated one of these trio of fighters, he would inject all-new life into his recently stagnated career.
First, let’s make sure that Ugas heals up completely and without any complications. Then after that, let’s hope that he comes back swinging for the fences!
