According to the man himself, Jessie Vargas is currently in negotiations with WBO junior middleweight champion Jamie Munguia for a potential September 15 fight.

The former two-division world champion broke the news on his Twitter. This comes as little surprise. We, here at 3kingsboxing, reported last year this fight was a possibility.

This match-up seems like a mismatch on paper, considering Munguia is one of the stronger punchers at junior middleweight. Yet, you should consider ever since his dominating fourth round stoppage victory over former WBO champion Sadam Ali in May 2018, he hasn’t looked all that impressive.

Sure, he’s unbeaten in his four title defenses with a stoppage win over Brandon Cook in between the three decision victories against former champion Liam Smith, Takeshi Inoue and Dennis Hogan. However, he appears more and more vulnerable with each passing fight.

He’s not the most fundamentally sound fighter and his technique could improve. Regarding his defense, that doesn’t exist. He has taken clean hits from guys who, fortunately for him, don’t come to mind as “big punchers”.

Vargas will head into this fight as Munguia’s most experienced and accomplished opponent by far. He has shared the ring with Manny Pacquiao, Adrien Broner, Timothy Bradley and most recently Humberto Soto.

The former WBO welterweight champion will be giving up the majority of the physical advantages. However, his decent skill set and experience could offset what he lacks physically and make for a good fight.

First things first, both fighters must agree to a deal!.
