Rey Vargas wants Leo Santa Cruz fight in the future!

WBC super bantamweight champion Rey Vargas (34-0, 22KOs) has set his sights on a fellow Mexican world champion for a future showdown. The current longest reigning super bantamweight champion wants to share the ring with multi-weight world champion Leo “El Terremoto” Santa Cruz (37-1-1, 19KOs).

Vargas, who has made six consecutive defenses of his WBC title and wants to unify the other titles at super bantamweight before a move up in weight. However, he told fighthype.com the following about his aspirations of a Santa Cruz showdown in the future, as well as his plans for his current division.

“I know there’s talk about Leo moving up to fight Gervonta Davis and if that’s the case, then so be it. My focus is to defend my title in my next fight, and in the following fight look for a unification. Then after that, then maybe we can see where we are when it comes to Leo Santa Cruz.

“Then we can pursue that fight further, but I know I have to give a great performance in my next fight against whoever it may be. I need to get the date first, then the opponent, handle business. Then move on to potentially unifying, and then push myself towards a match-up with Leo Santa Cruz, depending on whenever that may be.”

For Vargas, he clearly has the right plan and mindset: unify, then move up. The problem may be, however, will a fight with Santa Cruz be there by the time he moves up in weight? He’s currently campaigning at 122, while Cruz is fighting at 130. That’s two weight classes apart.

Would Santa Cruz be able to be able to drop back down to 126 or would Vargas be comfortable going up to 130? He certainly has the frame, as he’s 5’10 and a half.

Needless to say, a fight between these two would be interesting as they’ve both shown the ability to box and brawl throughout their careers.
