Vergil Ortiz Keeps Undefeated Record Intact Over Israil Madrimov
Top junior middleweight contender Vergil Ortiz (23-0, 21KO) remains undefeated after beating Israil Madrimov (10-2-1, 7KO).
In the early rounds, Madrimov took advantage of Ortiz’s lack of ability to cut off the ring. He used jabs, counters, angles, and footwork to confuse the undefeated Californian.
The quick movement mixed with fast combinations from Madrimov nullified Ortiz’s offense. In addition, he made the undefeated fighter pay for missing punches.
Ortiz’s offense came alive in the middle rounds. He landed hard body shots and found a home for the right hand as Madrimov became a stationary target. Madrimov landed some solid counter-right hands. However, he seemed tired from Ortiz’s aggressive pressure.
In the final rounds, the Uzbekistani decided to stand and fight. He landed hard hooks on the body and head. In addition, he forced Ortiz to fight off the back foot.
Ortiz’s defense was displayed as he avoided shots and fired back with precision-punching. Realizing a victory hung in the balance, both fighters fought hard until the final bell.
One judge scored it 117-111, and two judges saw it 115-113 in favor of Ortiz. During the post-fight interview, he called for a fight with another top fighter in the division next.
