Boots Ennis Engages Vergil Ortiz Jr. After Lubin Stoppage!
During his latest tour of duty, interim WBC super welterweight champion Vergil Ortiz Jr. (24-0, 22 KO’s) demolished veteran fighter Erickson “The Hammer” Lubin by way of second-round knockout. It was the first knockout for him in a little over a year. Sadly, for Lubin, who lost all three of his title shots by knockout, this likely ends any dream of being a world champion.
Ortiz Jr. on the flipside, is staring at a very bright future. First up appears to be interim WBA super welterweight champion Jaron “Boots” Ennis (35-0, 31 KO’s). The two have flirted with facing one another in the past but have yet to trade leather in the ring. Many put the greater weight of this missed fight upon Boots’ shoulders.
Perhaps in an effort to quell this narrative, Ennis was in attendance at Ortiz’s match and hopped in the ring during the post-fight activities. When face-to-face, the two boxers quibbled a bit but ultimately displayed a substantial amount of mutual respect and verbally agreed to dance with each other next.
This would be a treat of a fight for boxing enthusiasts the world over. However, given the sliding scale of business that the sport of boxing operates, on we’ll have to wait first to see if it actually gets made.
