Oscar De La Hoya Gives Troubling Statement About Ortiz vs Ennis
The biggest fight that needs to happen next is a matchup between top junior middleweight contenders Vergil Ortiz Jr. and Jaron “Boots” Ennis. After demolishing two-time title challenger Erickson Lubin, Ortiz welcomed the Philadelphian into the ring. As both fighters exchanged words to the crowd’s excitement, Golden Boy Promotions CEO Oscar De La Hoya made a statement that raised some eyebrows.
While being interviewed in the ring, De La Hoya was already in negotiation mode by stating that Ortiz holds all the cards. This would mean they call all the shots, when it comes to making the fight. Moreover, he will undoubtedly ask for a bigger cut of the purse, which could be a negotiation killer from the start.
Ortiz can sell in his home state of Texas, true. But he lacks a major bargaining chip – being a world champion. Boots has higher accolades, as a former unified welterweight champion. In addition, he sells out arenas in his hometown of Philadelphia. So if anyone has an edge, it swings to Ennis, unless they agree to an even split, which is reasonable.
In this author’s opinion, the fight may be put on hold until one or both of them win a title. Then the bout will be worth more money. I pray I am wrong and the powers that be give the fans what they want. But fans should brace themselves, in case the fight doesn’t happen.
