WBC Makes Ruling On Light Heavyweight Situation

Stevenson vs Jack and Gvozdyk vs Amar winners to face off

The WBC’s Board of Governors has reached a resolution on the light heavyweight division after a bit of confusion the last couple of weeks.

They agreed to sanction the fight between their champion Adonis Stevenson, 29-1, 24 KO, and Badou Jack, 22-1-2, 13 KO. The fight is set to take place on May 19 in Quebec.

They have also sanctioned a fight for the WBC interim-light heavyweight between Oleksandr Gvozdyk and Mehdi Amar, which takes place on March 17th in New York as part of a Top Rank on ESPN card.

The also stated that the winners of both fights will have to face each other although it’s not clear how soon after the fight will have to take place.

Eleider Alvarez, who has been the mandatory to Stevenson for over two years, will keep his mandatory status but will not get a chance to face the champion until the winner of the other two bouts take place.

Alvarez was scheduled for a purse bid ordered by the WBC for a fight with Gvozdyk to be for the interim title but chose to withdraw from that bout. He is expected to be in action on the Stevenson/Jack undercard.
