Jamel Herring may be Facing Shakur Stevenson Next
WBO junior lightweight champion Jamel “Semper Fi” Herring (22-2, 10KOs) vs multi-weight champion Carl “The Jackal” Frampton (28-2, 16KOs) seemed to be a done deal for early 2021.
However according to the WBO, Herring will now be obligated to fight former featherweight champion Shakur “Fearless” Stevenson (14-0, 8KOs) next!
The man that promotes all three fighters, Bob Arum, spoke on the situation with iFL TV.
“They can certainly have the opportunity to fight each other. It would be a good fight but it can’t be for the WBO title. Because apparently there’s a mandatory obligation to Shakur Stevenson.
“Unlike [Jack] Catterall and unlike the Thai guy [Apinan Khongsong], he is a pretty well known fighter that almost everyone in boxing regards as one of the premier fighters in the sport.
“Herring and Frampton can fight each other but it just can’t be for the title. So we’ll have to wait and see.
Again I’m staying out of it. All of these fighters are under contract with Top Rank and they got themselves into this pickle.
“Let them sort it out.”
It’s clear by this interview that Arum is being “hush hush” about what’s going on behind the scenes. If the bout with Frampton doesn’t happen that has to be a blow to Herring who has been prepping for months.

Especially knowing that it’s a big money showdown and a chance to add a quality name to his resume. Stevenson presents a totally different challenge being 23 years-old and constantly improving.
It’ll be interesting to see how things play out in the coming weeks and months.
3kingsboxing.com will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as they become available.
