Jaime Munguia Named WBO Mandatory to Janibek Alimkhanuly!
When last in the ring, middleweight contender Jaime Munguia (41-0, 33 KO’s) stopped overmatched Gonzalo Coria in three short rounds. It was the essentially projected outcome that most foresaw. In his post-fight interview, the undefeated Mexican expressed interest in facing middleweight champions Jermall Charlo (WBC) and Gennady Golovkin (IBF and WBA). Nevertheless, the WBO has now stepped in and ordered a bout between Munguia and WBO 160-pound champion Janibek Alimkhanuly (13-0, 8 KO’s).
The order comes with almost comical timing. This is due to two reasons: the first being Munguia is routinely derided for his lack of meaningful competition. And secondly, Alimkhanuly is coming off a far less than stellar performance over Denzel Bentley. So when coupling these two scenarios, you have a guy accused of not being serious (Munguia) going against another guy (Alimkhanuly) who recently looked more pedestrian than ever. This is a potentially fruitless situation for all involved.
IT IS PRIZEFIGHTING, AFTER ALL!!
Despite the potential sourpuss perspective that many may place on the match, it’s still a grand opportunity for each fighter. Munguia would certainly make for the most distinguished kill on Alimkhanuly’s resume, should he win. And obviously, victory for Munguia would result in him becoming a two-division champion. This is a prize not easy to thumb one’s nose at.
Bearing this in mind, the outside chatter of fans and insiders will likely mean very little to the two principal characters involved. Yet, let’s see if the two teams can come together and make a quick resolution. Thankfully, no matter how the matter resolves itself, 3Kings Boxing will be here to report the news.
