Ben Whittaker Swiftly Stops Rivera and Eyes 2027 World Title Fight
In his American debut, light heavyweight UK bruiser Ben “The Surgeon” Whittaker (12-0-1, 9 KO’s) won in impressive fashion. Whittaker, 29, accomplished this by stopping Richard “Popeye The Sailor Man” Rivera (27-3, 20 KO’s) by way of second round TKO.
With the win, the charismatic Matchroom Boxing promoted fighter’s future is looking exceedingly bright. With the spoils of war, The Surgeon, ranked #2 WBC, #3 IBF, and #13 WBO, collected the WBC silver light heavyweight title along with Rivera’s scalp. While enthusiastic about this most recent victory, Whittaker was reluctant to say what or who he wanted to target next.
When given his turn on the mic during the post-fight interview however, The Surgeon’s Matchroom Boxing promoter was not a whole lot more informative. Although he did provide a loose timeline for the talented boxer.
“But now it’s about Ben Whittaker, and this guy is going to go on to be another super star in the sport. We are going to get it right, we are going to headline back in Birmingham in October, live on DAZN. And me and Andy Lee and the team, we all have a plan for this guy to challenge for the world championships in 2027. And I promise you Ben Whittaker will be world champion and he’ll be back in America to defend, and more likely challenge for the undisputed world championship! Remember the name!”
