Could Demetrius Andrade Vacate His WBO Middleweight Title?
Rumor has it that two-time WBO champion Demetrius “Boo Boo” Andrade (31-0, 19 KO’s) is planning on vacating his WBO middleweight title. According to a report from SI.com, the two-division world champion’s team is working on finalizing a deal for him to face #1 WBO super middleweight contender Zach Parker in a final eliminator. The plan is for the winner to become the mandatory challenger to undisputed super middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (57-1-2, 39 KO’s).
This move by Andrade lines up with his goals of landing a marquee opponent in the ring. He had been ordered to defend his WBO middleweight title against hard-hitting, unbeaten mandatory Janibek Alimkhanuly (11-0, 7 KO’s). However, the purse bid would be delayed from January 14 to January 28 due to COVID-19 restrictions.
ANDRADE DETERMINED TO GET ALVAREZ IN THE RING WITH HIM!
Andrade, who turns 34 on February 26, continues his pursuit of Alvarez. He’s been on the trail of Alvarez since the two were competing as junior middleweights. For whatever reasons, Canelo has not seemed the least bit interested in locking horns with the 2008 U.S. Olympian. This latest attempt may signal Andrade’s best opportunity to secure a fight with Alvarez. However, he shouldn’t hold his breath, as Alvarez has tons of options.
If the trend continues and Andrade isn’t able to secure a fight with the Mexican superstar, there are plenty of marquee matchups that await him at super middleweight. Potential opponents include David Benavidez, Caleb Plant, Anthony Dirrell, and Daniel Jacobs. All of whom are former world champions. However, it would truly be a shame if Andrade leaves the middleweight division without having fought Gennady Golovkin, Jermall Charlo, Billy Joe Saunders, and Saul Alvarez.
3Kings Boxing will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as they become available.
