Will Vergil Ortiz Jr and Eimantas Stanionis Remain Healthy Until July 8?
Hopefully, the third time will prove the charm for welterweights Vergil Ortiz Jr (19-0, 19 KO’s) and Regular WBA champion Eimantas Stanionis (14-0, 9 KO’s). The two have been slated to duke it out on two previous occasions only to have the match scrapped due to illness.
The first time the Lithuanian pugilist pulled out for need of emergency appendectomy surgery. After being formally rescheduled, Ortiz Jr would then bow out when he resumed having trouble with rhabdomyolysis. The condition first began plaguing the fighter early in 2022. Now, as 3Kings Boxing previously reported, the two will collide on July 8.
RUMBLE IN THE INFIRMARY!
On the outside looking, this duel has all the earmarks of a great match in the making. Each fighter is young, hungry and full of talent. Even better, Ortiz Jr, ranked #1 (WBA), and Stanionis are volume punchers who tend to relentlessly push forward. Not only this, they are competing for control of Stanionis’s WBA title. With the strap, the owner would be in prime position to fight unified 147-pound champion Errol Spence Jr. So, naturally, the stakes are very high in this affair.
It will be interesting to see if their recent health maladies will have an adverse effect on their prizefight. This will be their first performance since recovering from their personal issues. Obviously, both will say that everything is now on the level, but all fighters say this when its often not the case.
Whether mental, physical, or both, Ortiz and Stanionis may very well have some significant hurdles to contend with on July 8. First however, lets wait to see if this snakebitten fight even makes it to the ring. Provided that it does, 3Kings Boxing will be here to report all the carnage and aftermath!
