Zelfa Barrett Wants Smoke With Lamont Roach Jr. Or Joe Cordina
In his last tour of duty, junior lightweight fighter Zelfa “Brown Flash” Barrett (31-2, 17 KO’s) secured a solid tenth-round TKO. He accomplished this by breaking down and debilitating his opponent, Jordan Gill, with nasty body shots. When all the fur had stopped flying, in the post-fight interview, Barrett and Matchroom Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn expressed interest in facing either WBA champion Lamont Roach (24-1-1, 9 KO’s) or IBF champion Joe Cordina (17-0, 9 KO’s).
“It’s just the beginning, and now we want to bring the likes of Lamont Roach. I know he is chasing Joe Cordina – he is defending soon as well. But anybody who has a strap at 130 pounds, I believe he has more than earned the right to fight and I believe he can beat them and I believe that he can become a world champion!”

With this win, Barrett is now on a three-fight win streak since his second professional loss to Shavkatszhon Rakhimov back on November 5, 2023. Since that defeat, Brown Flash has beaten Jason Sanchez, Costin Ion, Jordan Gill and climbed back to #8 (WBA) and #12 (IBF) in the rankings.
A potential showdown with Cordina will have to be placed on the backburner for the moment due to Cordina’s upcoming May 18 duel with Anthony Cacace. Obviously, Team Barrett would have to make sure that Cordina wins this encounter and gets by without any significant injuries.
Given this reality, it would probably make more logical sense to pursue a dance date with Lamont Roach. The WBA 130-pound champion is coming off a hard-fought win over Hector Luis Garcia to become champion in the first place. Now, we will have to wait and see how Team Roach responds to this new potential prizefight.
