Gilberto Ramirez Leaks Retirement Thoughts Ahead of Benavidez
Unified cruiserweight champion Gilberto “Zurdo” Ramirez could be in trouble against multi-divisional champion “The Monster” David Benavidez. Zurdo is making a big mistake thinking about retirement, going into the fight with a dangerous fighter like The Monster.
Boxing fans were taken by surprise when Benavidez announced the fight was happening after demolishing Anthony Yarde in November 2025. After the shock wore off, the boxing community began debating who would win.
Several boxing enthusiasts view Benavidez as the favorite to win. His work-rate, pressure, and power have left all challengers on the losing end of a decision. Furthermore, the Nevada native continues to show improved ring IQ in every fight and has looked unstoppable.
HE SHOULD NOT BE THINKING ABOUT RETIREMENT
Ramirez shouldn’t be dismissed, especially considering the advantages he holds going into the fight. He is the more experienced fighter, having competed at cruiserweight longer, and will enjoy a half-inch reach advantage.
During an interview with Fight Hub TV, the unified champion talked of retiring after two more fights, which is concerning. He hinted that his last two fights could be at heavyweight.
“Yeah, probably one or two more, and then it will be done for Zurdo Ramirez…I think so, I’ve been in this sport a long time. I’ve done my legacy. I want to continue. But, I don’t know.”
In boxing, there is a phrase: the sport is 90 percent mental and 10 percent physical. Once a fighter’s mental mindset comes into question, it is the beginning of their downfall. Ramirez will be putting everything on the line against Benavidez on the traditional Cinco de Mayo weekend on May 2.
Mentioning retirement with a fight against Benavidez days away is a huge red flag. This author believes Ramirez will lose even moreso now.
