Abdullah Mason Hopeful for a World Title Fight in 2025
Lightweight Abdullah Mason (15-0, 13 KOs) continues to draw rave reviews from fans and pundits alike. The 20-year-old is on the fast track at 135. Does that upward trajectory include a world title fight in 2025?
Fighting on the undercard of Christian Mbilli versus Sergiy Derevyanchenko on August 17 in Quebec, Canada, Mason looked fantastic during a second-round knockout over Mike Ohan Jr. It was supposed to be a step-up fight for Mason. But the young man took care of business with ease.
BIG PLANS AHEAD
After such an eye-opening performance, there’s plenty of excitement about Mason’s potential and future. During the post-fight news conference, the resident of Cleveland, Ohio said the sky is the limit.
“2025 is going to be a big year for us, and we’re looking to come back home in Cleveland and make a statement. So, we’re going to have a big year in 2025, inshallah, and we’re only going up.”
TOO MUCH, TOO SOON?
His promoter, Top Rank, has a goal of Mason fighting for a world title by the end of next year. But are his handlers pushing the kid too fast?
Mason is arguably the best young fighter in the sport. His talent jumps off the screen when you see him fight. The Ohio native is highly skilled, quick, and powerful. He also has a keen understanding of distance and timing. However, his greatest attribute may be his patience. Young fighters tend to get eager and greedy, which leads to mistakes. Mason fights with a maturity well beyond his years.
Those are the ingredients of a fighter with world title qualities and thus can be advanced quicker than most folks his age. You can understand why Top Rank has such high hopes for him. Of course, Mason must gain more experience. Heck, he has yet to fight in a ten-round contest. However, you don’t stall the progress of what seems to be a gifted fighter.
At this point, they are moving him at just the right pace. Their mission to have him fight for a world title in 2025 seems more than reasonable.
