There’s No Excuse For Jaron Ennis vs Vergil Ortiz Not Being Made
Conflicting stories about WBA welterweight champion Jaron “Boots” Ennis facing junior middleweight contender Vergil Ortiz in 2026 are buzzing throughout the boxing community.
Matchroom Boxing chairman Eddie Hearn dropped a bombshell on iFl TV that Ennis and Ortiz will fight next year. The British promoter attempted to cover for the Philadelphia fighter when news broke of failed negotiations to stage the fight earlier in the year.
Yet, Vergil Ortiz Sr. claims that, to his knowledge, there is no fight agreement. His post on X has boxing fans raising an eyebrow, wondering who’s lying and who is telling the truth.

Failure to make this fight a reality is a bad look for both sides, in this author’s opinion. In addition, Ortiz Sr. claiming the ship has sailed is small-minded, because it’s a fight fans want to see.
It will be interesting to see what happens over the next couple of weeks. But Ennis vs Ortiz is a fight that must happen.
