Bam Rodriguez Is Grossly Overlooked By Boxing Fans
In boxing, it’s not unusual for elite fighters to go underappreciated, despite their consistent brilliance in the ring. Unified super flyweight champion Jesse “Bam” Rodriguez remains underappreciated by the boxing community and media outlets.
On July 19, Rodriguez put on a commanding performance, stopping South Africa’s Phumelela Cafu in the tenth round in a unification. It was a display of elite skill, ring IQ, and championship mettle. It is everything you’d expect from one of the sport’s brightest young stars.
His milestone victory was overshadowed by Filipino Icon Manny Pacquiao’s controversial draw against WBC welterweight titleholder Mario Barrios. The headlines, social media chatter, and post-fight analysis revolved almost exclusively around Pacquiao’s comeback, leaving Rodriguez’s career-defining moment in the shadows.
SHOW HIM MORE LOVE
Among many American fans, the common refrain is dismissive: “He’s only a junior bantamweight.” For some, divisions below featherweight don’t merit their attention. For others, the spectacle of celebrity boxing takes priority. In addition, fighters like Gervonta Davis, Teofimo Lopez, Jake Paul, and Ryan Garcia dominate timelines and search engines. It’s appalling that Paul and Garcia, who haven’t accomplished anything, get more media coverage than Bam.
That mindset is part of the sport’s broader problem. It makes you wonder if fans are truly invested in the sport or are simply drawn to the glitz, controversy, and clickbait.
A two-division unified champion, Rodriguez has done everything asked of him: beat elite competition, move up in weight, unify titles, and do it all with flair and humility. But in a sport where narratives often overshadow merit, “Bam” finds himself underappreciated.
