Arum Says Bud v Spence is Close

Since the moment that WBO world welterweight champion Terence “Bud” Crawford (36-0, 27 KO’s) moved up to the 147lbs division, in mid-2018, the boxing world has clamored to see him face WBC and IBF world welterweight champion Errol “The Truth” Spence Jr (26-0, 21 KO’s). Each man has expressed interest in the prizefight. However, frustrating industry politics have spoiled this magnificent potential showdown thus far.

Now in a recent Q&A session on-line, Top Rank’s Bob Arum explained how this bout is much closer than the fans may think. Not only this, Arum is firm on his belief that had the COVID-19 pandemic not thrown the entire globe into limbo, there is a high likelihood that we could have gotten this fight in the third or fourth quarter of 2020.

“If we hadn’t have had this coronavirus situation and we had continued doing fights, in March and to this day we would be talking now about a Crawford/Spence fight towards the end of the year. I really believe that would have happened! So I am optimistic that’ll happen next year once this situation clears itself up and once we are operating as usual again.”

Let’s just hope that when this coronavirus is taken care of, Arum maintains this same energy! If so, then finally at long last the fight-world can be treated to Crawford v Spence, the bout that many feel will finally crown the one true king of the division.
