Alycia Baumgardner v Edith Matthysse UK Championship Bout Set for April 16

Matchroom Boxing has announced that Alycia Baumgardner (11-1, 7 KOs) will make her first defense of the WBC women’s junior lightweight title against Edith Soledad Matthysse (17-11-1, 1 KOs) on April 16 at the Manchester Arena in Manchester, England.

At age 27, Baumgardner is one of the fresh faces and hot names in women’s boxing. She captured the title with a fourth-round TKO over previously unbeaten Terry Harper in November of 2021. The finish was sensational as Harper was literally out on her feet. It was one of the more memorable knockouts of that year.

She now faces Matthysse, a former unified world champion at 126 pounds. In August 2015, she defeated Jelena Mrdjenovic to capture the WBA and WBC featherweight titles. She lost the belts in a rematch in March of 2016. Now 41, the warrior from Argentina is moving up in weight to take on the hard-hitting junior lightweight champ.

BACK ON BRITISH SOIL

Great Britain is a familiar spot for the defending champ. She defeated Harper in her last outing in Sheffield, England. Now she ventures back to England for her first title defense. For Matthysse, this will be the seventh time she’s fought for a world title.

This bout will take place on the undercard of Conor Benn v Chris van Heerden. Baumgardner hopes a win is a springboard toward a unification bout against WBA women’s 130 pound champ Hyun Mi Choi. Matthysse is looking to score what pundits would consider a sizable upset.
