Ben Whittaker Stops Gavazi and Gvozdyk Gets Name-dropped
In his latest call of duty, light heavyweight boxer Ben “The Surgeon” Whittaker (10-0-1, 7 KO’s) incinerated his opponent Benjamin Gavazi by way of first-round knockout. With the spoils of war, Whittaker collected the vacant WBC Silver light heavyweight title. Armed with the belt, the talented UK fighter has been thrust onto the division’s main stage in a major way.
Despite his new status, neither Whittaker nor his Matchroom Boxing promoter, Eddie Hearn, gave any solid indication of what boxer they were targeting next. If going for the gusto, The Surgeon would target WBC light heavyweight champion David Benavidez. Benavidez recently took on, beat down and stopped Anthony Yarde in his last duel on November 22. Yet, while this is an interesting prizefight, Benavidez already announced his next bout will be against unified champion Gilberto Ramirez.
Hearn he did not toss out any specific names. Yet, he did mention in the post-fight interview that Whittaker would more than likely face an opponent in a domestic arena before leaping over the pond to take on any American fighters. One potential name that was briefly mentioned was Oleksandr Gvozdyk (21-2, 17 KO’s). Gvozdyk stopped Anthony Halloway back in April after losing to David Benavidez on June 15, 2024. Perhaps the lure of Whittaker’s newly acquired title will be enough to entice Gvozdyk into battle. So, for now, we will just have to play the waiting game to see what’s next for Team Whittaker.
