Boots Wants Vergil Ortiz Next to Start his Tour at 154!
As predicted, Jaron “Boots” Ennis (35-0, 31 KO’s) won his first match in the super welterweight division in dominant fashion. He accomplished this by knocking out Uisma Lima in the very first round. Next, Boots has his eyes set square on Vergil Ortiz.
At this point, the fans have called for Boots to step up his competition and face one of the universally recognized top tier boxers in his division for quite a while. Despite having opportunities to face Brian Norman Jr., Devin Haney and Teofimo Lopez, Ennis has yet to find his way into a truly big fight. Sticking to business as usual, while he may not actually trade dukes with his fellow marquee fighters, Boots will say their names as he did this evening.
“I sent a big message; you know who I want next . . . I’ll fight the winner of (Vergil Ortiz vs Erickson Lubin), but I want Vergil Ortiz next. If we can’t get Vergil Ortiz next, I heard that baby cub was calling me out; [Jermell] Charlo, he can get it next.”
“[Sebatian] Fundora, what’s his name – Bakhram? The IBF champ, he can get it. Everybody at 154 can get it! Xander [Zayas] can get it, anyone at 154, I am belt chasing! This is my division – 154 is mine. I am on tour.”
Out of the blizzard of opponents that Ennis mentioned, Vergil Ortiz (23-0, 21 KO’s), his main interest, does have to lock horns with Erickson Lubin this November 8. Provided that Ortiz prevails in that contest, it will be interesting to see if Boots actually does mix it up with the heavy-handed Texan. As always, time will tell. Let’s just hope Ennis’s tenure at 154 is more substance than wishful thinking.
