Caleb Plant makes it look easy in third title defense against Caleb Truax!
Looking to make the third defense of his IBF Super Middleweight title, Caleb “Sweethands” Plant (20-0, 12KOs) would have to get by rough and rugged former IBF Super Middleweight champion Caleb Truax (31-4-2, 19KOs).
THE JAB!
The jab is universally known as the most important punch in the sport of boxing. It can be used to setup power shots to the head and body, as well as defensively. Plant came out utilizing his jab to great success, often doubling and tripling upside the head of Truax! It would setup thunderous left hands that would land to both the head and body of Truax.
Plant would also showcase his ring IQ as he switched up his attack from the outside to the inside. The speed of Plant left Truax dazed, confused, and, bloody with no answers on how to deal with the athletic Plant. After twelve one-sided rounds of left and right hands from Plant, the Tennessee native would be announced the winner by way of a unanimous decision. The three score cards would read 120-108.
In his post-fight interview, Plant revealed he believed he broke his hand. While he did not specify which one, this is not something you would like to hear. The severity of the injury will determine the length of time he is out of the ring. Hopefully it is not a serious or major break.
IS PLANT READY FOR CANELO NEXT?
There is no secret that Caleb Plant wants WBA and WBC Super Middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez (54-1-2, 36KOs) next. However, a possible showdown would not happen until late 2021 as Alvarez has two fights already signed, sealed and delivered. However, the question must be asked, is he really ready for Alvarez?
I personally do not feel he is. While he is certainly talented, his lack of top competition and big fight experience worries me. Alvarez has been in the ring with tons of upper echelon fighters, only losing to one: the great Floyd Mayweather. For Plant, the most logical fight to make for him next is one against former WBC Super Middleweight champion David Benavidez.
These two men genuinely do not like each other and both guys will be available to duke it out and settle their differences. Meanwhile, Alvarez will seek to become the WBO champion when he takes on WBO champion Billy Joe Saunders in May. The winner of that fight would more than likely move on to an undisputed fight with a chance to make history and become the first-ever undisputed super middleweight champion.
