Canelo Alvarez Tells Jermall Charlo And David Benavidez To Fight Each Other

After undisputed super middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (57-1-2, 39KOs) bypassed PBC’s two-fight deal that would’ve included a summer bout with WBC middleweight champion Jermall Charlo (32-0, 22KOs) and a fall bout with former WBC champ David Benavidez (25-0, 22KOs), the Mexican superstar had a little message for the two fighters. In an interview with ESNews, he stated the following.

“Yes, […] everyone wants to fight me. They have many options too, like fighting each other. Why don’t they fight each other? They need it. This year I’m busy. “

While fight fans and pundits may not like that neither man won’t be getting their opportunity against Alvarez, at least in 2022 he’s right about two things. Both Charlo and Benavidez have plenty of options. Secondly, they should face each other. Regardless, Canelo has made it clear he doesn’t mind fighting anyone. Whether you believe that or not is completely up to you. However, he also wants to see these other top contenders, from middleweight to light heavyweight, face each other.

Charlo declared he would knockout Benavidez, which led to a back and forth with each other throughout the media. This created a lot of excitement at the thought of a potential bout taking place between to very talented fighters. Benavidez would continue his verbal assault on Charlo (hyperlink 2). However, as it is often the case lately in boxing, the fight never materialized.

Now with Alvarez out of the picture, it’s time for these two fighters to start reconsidering that bout. It’s an exciting fight that would provide tons of action. Both men have styles that mesh well together, as well as, power that can stop most fighters from 160–168lbs. It would also go a long way towards strengthening their case for Alvarez to fight them in 2023.

Let’s hope that both men put their egos to the side and make this fight happen. As much as they want a fight with Alvarez, neither man can nor should put their careers on hold in order to get it. There are plenty of marquee fights that await them if they so choose to pursue them.
